Why Rituals?

Rituals are an ancient and fundamental element of the human experience. Through rituals and practices, the simplest actions and gestures are transformed into symbolic expressions, with their deeper meaning reinforced each time they are performed.

Empirical evidence in the wellness space clearly illustrates the value of healthy habits, habit stacking, and creating routines. However, while habits and routines can provide consistency over time, they often lack awareness. Ritual transcends the routine, requiring both awareness and intention and transforming the mindless patterns of everyday life into dedicated, intentional self-care practices.

By demystifying the concept of the ritual and harnessing the power of purposeful practice in our day-to-day existence, we are able to unlock the potential for renewal, consistency, and mindfulness within our own lives.

Evidence of human ritual predates the written word by tens of thousands of years, with ancient practices ranging from meditation, reflection, worship and prayer to poetry, song and dance. Humanity has long understood the value of consecrated spaces dedicated to these sacred practices, as evidenced by the many ancient and extant sciences whose origins span the globe. Ayurvedic medicine recognizes the importance of treating the individual, yet does not lose sight of the importance of that individual’s environment, while the Indian science of Vastu focuses on harnessing energy to create harmony between people and their surroundings. Both of these modalities highlight the influence of the spaces in which we find ourselves, and leverage the environment to elevate and further engage with the universal energy of their healing practices.

Much like the science and rituals that surround it, this universal energy is uniquely human and intrinsically creative in nature. In fact, we see in the modern Creative a certain respect for dedicating intentional space to their endeavors—an art studio, dance studio, recording studio, atelier, workshop, study, and more. The physical environment provides a foundation for the creative process, grounding the Creative themselves, expanding their infinite intuition, and catalyzing the manifestation of inspiration.

Intentional spaces, whether religious, agnostic, creative or spiritual, provide a safe and visually appealing place to support our practices of self-care. They offer us visual cues that focus our mind, body and spirit on the rituals they contain.

At Alkeme, we believe that creating daily rituals around self-care allows us to connect more deeply to ourselves and improve our wellbeing.
